Over Memorial Day weekend, we got a dog. Well, a puppy actually. I know crazy, right? Like we need to add more craziness to crazytown.
But Patrick and I have always wanted to add a dog to the family, because we have had some pretty stellar dogs in the past and we want our kids to grow up with pets. On a whim, we decided to go to the local animal shelter and check out the dogs that were there. We spotted a black lab mix that was a foster dog and decided to get to know her. We had to convince the girls that she was indeed a girl dog and that a black dog doesn't mean she's a boy. They were pretty insistent on getting a girl doggie. I think it has something to do with all the Fancy Nancy books we read, and Saige imagining a white poofy dog with pink bows in her hair, being the perfect dog for our family. The girls kept saying we have to find the perfect dog for our family, and Patrick and I kept telling them that a BIG dog was the only dog for our family. ;)
Well, the foster parents had already crate trained her from the time she was 3 weeks old. Boom. Huge plus! She seemed pretty calm and didn't bark the entire time we were there. Boom. Another huge plus. And even though we thought she was probably too good to be true, for doggie shelter interviews, she passed with flying colors.
Saige came up with her name. Please meet Ruby.
Meadow is super excited to introduce her to you.
The first day, the kids did a lot of this.

Because Ruby spent a lot of time in her crate and in hiding. I think she was overwhelmed by the kids, and truth be told, she still is.
Because Reed especially loves Ruby.
But Ruby is not quite sure she likes him yet.
I'm not really sure why...
Maybe it has something to do with the "alpha dog" syndrome.
Reed has had to apologize for pushing and sitting on Ruby many times already. Here he is trying to make up with her, but she's not having it.
But this relationship that is forming is what good stories are made of and I have already started formulating a children's book titled, Reed and Ruby. Pretty catchy, isn't it? I am looking forward to stories being made and for Ruby to be a part of our family. So far, it has been pretty seamless.
